Interpreting Political Unrest in Hong Kong Through "The Midnight After" (2014)

By Justin Wong Jun-sheng - Hong Kong is standing at a crucial social and political juncture in its history. A former British colony, it has retained its unique legal system, electoral system, and political democracy. These systems have worked together to create a society in which residents are entitled to their rights with a strong and equal rule of law that governs the society. The 1st of July 1997 marked the handover of Hong Kong from Britain to the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the PRC (HKSAR). Many fear that as time progresses, the PRC...

By Gina Apperson - Study abroad has become an important aspect in higher education in the United States, as the phenomenon of globalization has grown increasingly important to how universities equip students for the professional and social world. In 2014, the Institute of International Education proposed the Generation Study Abroad campaign to provide more study abroad opportunities, with the goal of reaching 600,000 students studying abroad by 2019, more than a twofold increase from the 2013-2014 academic year ("Generation Study Abroad," 2014). As study abroad becomes more relevant and timely for university students...

How Much Should I Tip? Restaurant Tipping Behavior as a Result of Prior Foodservice Experience

By Katherine S. Fisher - Tipping is a customary practice in the U.S., but many have questioned why customers are so willing to give money away to a server in the foodservice industry. Previous literature has explored factors that influence tipping behavior, such as social norms, age, gender, ethnicity, and intrinsic and self-presentational reasoning. This study observes a relationship between tipping behavior and prior employment in the foodservice industry. Using survey data from 500 University of Maryland students, the study finds that those who have worked as a waiter or waitress believe that the average tipping percentage...
